Liability Coverage of Checked Baggage by JetBlue

Flying with any airline may imply risks, including baggage related risks. Sometimes people's baggage does not arrive in time, sometimes it has suffered scratches or other similar wear, and sometimes it does not even arrive to the destination. This of course occurs in the worst-case scenario, but most common in long flights or combined flights, passengers can encounter these inconveniences.

People who travel by plane sometimes wonder what are the limits of the liability coverage of checked baggage of the airline they are traveling with. This article will deal with the liability coverage of baggage at JetBlue.

JetBlue covers carrier’s liability for loss, damage, and delay of checked baggage and is limited to provable damages of several Special Drawing Rights per kilogram, per passenger. These vary depending on whether it is a domestic or international transportation. For example, liability coverage for domestic transportation can be up to US $3300 per passenger. However, passengers can pay for a higher value than the one covered. This costs US $1 for US $100 bought in additional baggage insurance. This is only possible for domestic flights only.

Passengers must bear in mind that there are some rules as to what JetBlue can cover. For instance, the company will not be responsible for goods that are fragile and perishable. Further, since there are some dimension restrictions, JetBlue will not assume resposibility for oversized bags, or overweight baggage.

Sometimes luggage can suffer normal wear while being transported. Normal wear can include scratches, or damage to the wheels of baggage. JetBlue will not be responsible for the loss or damage of different parts of the baggage, including straps, pockets, or zippers.

Some personal items are neither covered by JetBlue. Some examples of these are jewelry, watches, computers, and any document that might be in the baggage, no matter whether they are checked or carry-on baggage.

Some other items that the airline does not assume responsibility for the damage or loss of, are currency and medication. Passengers should never check currency and must carry it at their own risk, the same as any essential medication that they carry. Fragile items like bottles, artworks, or any other item that might be broken during transportation will not be covered neither. JetBlue is not liable for irreplaceable items such as antiques checks, or contact lenses. The same applies to pershable items like food, flowers or plants.

It is essential that clients make a claim as soon as possible so that the airline can start working on the case. JetBlue will try to compensate passengers as long as their baggage has observed the check in requirements. The liability that has been described above is regulated by the Warsaw Convention and the Hague Protocol.

When flying, passengers might experience inconveniences with their luggage. In some cases it suffers wear and in other cases it might be lost. For all these cases, airlines assume liability and compensate their clients. JetBlue’s liability restrictions are detailed so as to inform their clients and avoid future struggles.
